Chief Adviser Announces April Elections – BNP Secretary General’s Response and Party Preparations

Yesterday (June 6), Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation on television, announcing that the next general election will be held in April (first half of 2026). He assured viewers that the Election Commission will soon release a detailed roadmap to ensure a fair and impartial process.

That same night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir returned home from Bangkok, Thailand, following eye surgery and a brief recovery period. Speaking with reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Fakhrul said,

> “We have always called for a prompt election and expected the date to be announced by December of this year. The declaration of an April election did not meet the nation’s expectations and has created uncertainty.”

Fakhrul also reported that, upon arriving in Bangkok on May 13, he underwent a successful retina operation on his left eye on May 15. He is currently resting and plans to resume political activities soon.

That very night, the BNP’s National Standing Committee convened virtually. After reviewing the Chief Adviser’s announcement, they resolved to hold firm in their demand for elections by December. Party sources indicate that detailed programs to advance this demand will be announced in the coming days.
