On Thursday afternoon (12 June), Dr. Zakiul Islam, Deputy Director of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), confirmed that two patients exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms have been admitted to the ICU. Initial rapid antigen tests returned positive results.
1. Limitations of RT-PCR Testing
Although MMCH’s PCR machine is fully functional, a shortage of specific reagent kits has halted COVID-19 RT-PCR diagnostics. The country depends on just two suppliers for these kits. As a result, the hospital is relying solely on rapid antigen testing.
2. Preparing for a Potential Surge
Dr. Zakiul Islam noted, “With cases rising again, we are ready as if facing a second or third wave.” To that end, the hospital has taken the following steps:
• Dedicated COVID Ward: A separate unit has been prepared to isolate and treat suspected cases.
• Staff Briefings: Medical and nursing teams have received detailed instructions and training on safety protocols.
• Administrative Coordination: Regular meetings have been held with hospital leadership and health authorities to align on response measures.
3. Challenges in Procuring Reagents
Dr. Nazia Haque, Associate Professor in the Microbiology Department, explained, “Our PCR machine is operational, but without the correct reagent kits, we cannot perform COVID-19 RT-PCR tests effectively. We are in continuous contact with the Directorate General of Health Services and suppliers to secure more kits.”
4. Limited Rapid Antigen Kit Supply
Deputy Director (Administration) Dr. Main Uddin reported, “We currently have 300 rapid antigen kits, sufficient to test 300 individuals. However, this method is not 100% reliable.”
5. Next Steps
• Securing a Steady Supply: Despite repeated requests to the health authorities, no new reagent stock has arrived; the hospital is also exploring local procurement options.
• Ongoing Testing and Care: Until RT-PCR is restored, treatment decisions will be based on rapid antigen results for critically ill patients.
• Public Health Advice: The hospital continues to urge the community to wear masks, maintain social distancing, and stay up to date with vaccinations.
